Bulcock Beach Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast
At the southern end of the Sunshine Coast is Caloundra, with great beaches and a good spot for fishing. It's perhaps more suited to families, but also a lovely spot, with some good caravan parks, plenty of water sports opportunities and an excellent windsurfing spot on Bullock Beach, overlooking Bribie Island. This stretch of water between Bribie Island and the mainland is called the Pumicestone Passage and provides a perfect spot for other watersports such as sailing, swimming and fishing.
Inland from Caloundra stand the impressive Glass House Mountains. These are of extreme Dreamtime significance to the Kabi Aborigines who inhabited the region, before European settlers displaced them. The mountains, a range of distinctive peaks ranging from 100 to 556 yards, were formed by gradual weathering of the wind and rain on volcanic activity more than 20 million years ago. They now form several separate national parks where bushwalking, climbing and bird watching are all popular activities.
Safe water swimming, fishing, boating, windsurfing (N.B. Caloundra Bar is extremely dangerous - please do not attempt to cross). Boardwalk, BBQ and picnic facilities, children's playground. Patrolled by Council Lifeguards weekdays during summer school holidays, and weekends and public holidays by volunteers from Ithaca Royal Lifesaving Club.
